Women’s Soccer Returns Home for Final Regular Season Match Against Presbyterian Tuesday Night
ROCK HILL, SC- The Winthrop women’s soccer team will have its final regular season game at home this Tuesday against Presbyterian College at 6:00 p.m. The Lady Eagles have never lost to the Blue Hose in the seven meetings between the teams.
Winthrop (11-4-1,7-3 Big South) is looking to end its season on a winning note, already securing a home game in the opening round of the Big South Conference Tournament despite a heartbreaking loss to top seeded Radford this past Saturday. Juniors Grace Radler and Krystyna Freda and sophomore Taylor Walton all earned goals last week, with Freda earning her 7th game winning goal of the year and tying the current conference record for single season game winning goals. Freda is currently ranked first in the nation for Division I players in points per game (2.53) and goals per game (1.133). Freshman Lauren Watts got an assist after her clear was settled and taken in by Walton for a goal and was a huge part in holding off Liberty’s attack earlier last week. Walton has five goals on the year, getting three game winners, and coming in 3rd in conference rankings for game winning goals this year.
Presbyterian (8-8, 5-5 Big South) most recently dropped a 2-1 decision at home to High Point. Senior Tori Davis leads the Blue Hose with eight goals, five of them game winners, placing her 2nd in the conference in game winning goals behind Freda. Davis earned a hat trick in Presbyterian’s victory over VMI and two of her game winning goals came against conference opponents Gardner Webb and Campbell. Senior defender Stephanie Allen has scored twice this year and commands a defense that has earned a 1.21 goals against average. The Blue Hose have gone with goalkeeper Jordan Broadway as their starter this year, but sophomore Sydney Fontenot has also seen action in eight games this year. Presbyterian has also secured a place in the conference tournament, currently ranking 7th in the Big South standings.
Head coach Brian Purcell has been with the Blue Hose since their inaugural year in 1989 and in that time has earned himself a record of 232-178-19.
