Winthrop Athletic Director Chuck Rey recently announced that the university has extended the contract of head men’s basketball coach Mark Prosser through the 2028-29 season.

Prosser, who became the seventh head coach of the men’s basketball program on April 2, 2021, recently completed his fourth season leading the Eagles. During his tenure, the team has achieved two 20-win seasons.

According to Rey, Prosser has consistently demonstrated a commitment to excellence, guiding the men’s basketball program to two Big South Championship finals in just four years. He noted that Prosser ranks among the top three Big South Conference coaches in wins during this period and led the team to its first-ever collective GPA above 3.0. Rey also highlighted Prosser’s ability to recruit and retain talented student-athletes of high character, fostering a positive culture aligned with Winthrop University’s values. He emphasized that Prosser and his family are invested in Winthrop University and York County, expressing enthusiasm for the contract extension to ensure continued success and stability for the basketball program.

Prosser acknowledged the contributions of the student-athletes and coaching staff over the past four seasons, stating they have been integral to the team’s success both on and off the court. He expressed gratitude for their efforts and the confidence shown by university leadership in continuing to build the program. Prosser affirmed his family’s appreciation for the Winthrop and Rock Hill community, noting it feels like home. He also emphasized that the program’s goals are not yet achieved and expressed continued motivation to push the team forward and achieve further success.

During Prosser’s four seasons, the Eagles have remained a competitive force in the Big South Conference, reaching the Big South Title Game for the second time this past March. In his debut season, the team achieved an undefeated home record (13-0), a feat only accomplished twice before in program history, and holds a combined 47-10 home record under his leadership. Prosser was the third coach in program history to secure 20 or more wins in their first season and the first Eagles coach to achieve 14 league wins in their inaugural year. This past season, Prosser moved into fourth place all-time for coaching victories at Winthrop, surpassing Randy Peele.
