May 21, 2025 | Fort Mill, SC — The Fort Mill School District Board of Trustees held its regular meeting on May 20, 2025, with a packed agenda that included major recognitions, a superintendent search update, and significant financial decisions affecting families across the district.

Recognitions and Leadership Updates

The board opened with special recognitions for three distinguished administrators:

  • Dr. Mike Waiksnis, named South Carolina Instructional Leader of the Year.
  • Mr. Grey Young, honored as South Carolina Administrator of the Year.
  • Dr. Chuck Epps, recipient of the SCASA Lifetime Achievement Award.

An update was also provided on the ongoing superintendent search, with three finalists having completed their “Day in the District” visits: Mr. Jason Johns, Dr. Mary Stratos, and Mr. Grey Young. The board plans to appoint the new superintendent by the end of May.

Proposed Sports Fee Increase for 2025–2026

As part of an athletics update, district leaders proposed a hike in athletic fees for middle and high school students:

  • Middle School: $150 per sport, with the third sport free.
  • High School: $150 per sport.

The additional revenue would support a proposed 25% increase in coaching stipends, aiming to bring Fort Mill’s compensation more in line with state averages and enhance coach retention and recognition. The board is expected to vote on the fee adjustment at a future meeting.

Board Approves First Meal Price Increase in Five Years

The board voted to increase cafeteria meal prices for the upcoming school year due to rising food and labor costs. The following changes were approved:

  • Breakfast: Increased by $0.50, from $1.35 to $1.85.
  • Elementary Lunch: Increased by $0.75, from $2.25 to $3.00.
  • Middle/High School Lunch: Increased by $0.75, from $3.00 to $3.75.

This marks the first increase in meal prices since 2020.

Budget Update and Year-End Transfer

Chief Finance Officer Leanne Lordo provided an update on the 2025–2026 budget, noting that adjustments may be needed depending on the outcome of ongoing state-level budget discussions. Fort Mill’s enrollment and funding are being closely monitored by the General Assembly’s conference committee.

The board also reviewed a proposed year-end transfer of approximately $5.8 million in surplus revenue to support one-time district needs. These include new classroom setups, athletic equipment replacement, ebook collections, and digital records scanning.

Bond Issuance Approved

The board approved a resolution to issue special obligation bonds to support capital projects funded by the 2024 bond referendum.
