South Carolina residents now have access to free radon test kits through the state Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC), as part of an ongoing effort to raise awareness about the dangers of radon gas in homes.

Radon is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless radioactive gas that forms naturally from the decay of uranium in soil, rock, and water. It can enter homes through cracks in foundations, gaps around pipes, or other structural openings. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer nationwide, and the number one cause among non-smokers.

Since the gas cannot be detected by human senses, the EPA stresses that testing is the only way to determine whether radon is present in a home. DHEC is offering free radon test kits while supplies last to help residents assess and improve their indoor air quality.

In addition to DHEC’s free kits, homeowners can purchase test kits from certified laboratories or through the National Radon Program. Those buying kits from retail stores are advised to check expiration dates to ensure accuracy.

Homeowners may also opt to hire a certified radon measurement provider. Professionals certified by the American Association of Radon Scientists and Technologists (AARST) or the National Radon Safety Board offer expert testing services and guidance on mitigation if high levels are detected.

DHEC encourages South Carolina residents to take advantage of this opportunity to test their homes, noting that elevated radon levels can occur in any type of building, regardless of age or location.
