One of the men at the center of the Civil Rights Movement in Rock Hill has died. According to the Herald, Mack Workman passed away this week… He’s been living in New York since the 60’s but was part of the group that became known as the Friendship Nine in Rock Hill. In 1961, Workman and eight other students were convicted of trespassing after sitting at a “whites only” lunch counter at McCrory’s Five and Dime. They chose to spend a month in the York County Jail rather than pay a fine. Workman graduated from Emmett Scott High School in Rock Hill in 1960 before attending Friendship Junior College. Mack Workman, passed away at 81 years old.
