The Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport’s General Aviation Terminal has been awarded a Gold Leed certification from the U-S Green Building council. The award was presented to the airport this morning. GSP Executive Director Dave Edwards says this award is a milestone.

This is a first step in an effort by the Airport Commission and the airport staff to make sure that with every project we do moving forward we are very sensitive to the environment. We think we need to be leading the way as we move forward as it relates to airports in the Upstate and throughout the state.

The General Aviation Terminal opened in January and currently houses Stephens Aviation.

Today, the airport also announced that Southwest Airlines has planned additional flights from the airport when they begin service next year. Rosylin Weston at GSP said Southwest will have direct one-stop flights to Boston, Denver and Las Vegas.

So what that means for the passengers here is that you can get on a Southwest plane, as an example, fly from here to BWI, stay on that plan and continue on to Boston. Same thing with Vegas being Midway and Denver being Nashville.

Southwest Airlines will begin service at GSP on March 13th.
