Eagles Extend Win Streak to Seven With 8-4 Win Over ETSU
ROCK HILL, SC-The Winthrop baseball team extends its winning streak to seven with 8-4 win over East Tennessee State on Wednesday night.
The Eagles improve to 29-14 overall while the Bucs drop to 14-26.
Head coach Tom Riginos says he is extremely proud of his team’s performance the last two nights. “This season the guys have come out and prepared, been focused and not let down, says Riginos.
Mark Lowrie went 4-4 on the day and scored three runs.
Zach Sightler earned his fifth win of the year, relieving starter Riley Arnone and holding the Bucs to just two hits in two innings. Peyton Taylor took the loss, surrendering three runs on five hits in 1 2/3 innings.
After the Bucs jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning, the Eagles responded with a three-run second inning. Mark Lowrie and Babe Thomas led off the inning with back to back singles and both runners advanced on a wild pitch by Taylor. Jace Whitley walked to load the bases and Lowrie scored on a sacrifice fly by Chad Smith. Kyle Edwards reloaded the bases with a single and Thomas came home on walk by Tyler Asbill. Whitley took the lead for the Eagles, crossing the plate as Brad Kaczka reached on fielder’s choice.
Chad Smith got his second RBI of the night, knocking home Lowrie from third on a single through the left side to bring the score to 4-2. Lowrie doubled to centerfield and advanced on a single by Whitley.
Pinch runner Danny Carrier pulled the Bucs within one, scoring from third on a single by Zach Thompson.
Winthrop pushed the lead with three runs in the fifth inning. John Menken singled and advanced to third on a single by Lowrie. Back to back wild pitches scored Menken and advanced Lowrie to third before a sacrifice fly by Whitley brought Lowrie home.
Kevin Phillips got one back for the Bucs with a solo home run over the left field fence to lead off the eighth.
Smith and Asbill tacked on two more insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Smith walked and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Edwards before scoring on a single up the middle by Asbill. Asbill, who had advanced to second on the throw home, advanced to third as Kaczka grounded out and crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
Winthrop returns to conference action, traveling to Charleston to take on Charleston Southern in a three-game series.
