ROCK HILL, SC- The Winthrop baseball team defeated Jacksonville 6-4 on Sunday afternoon at The Winthrop Ballpark to complete its sweep of the three-game series.

Winthrop improves to 6-3 while JU drops to 5-6. The Eagles travel to Clemson on Tuesday for a 5 p.m. game before taking on USC-Upstate on Wednesday in Spartanburg at 4 p.m.

The Eagles batted around the third inning as they capitalized on two Dolphin errors to score five runs.

Travis Shelley, who came into the game in the fifth inning, earned his first win of the year as he allowed one run on three hits in three innings. Joey Strain pitched the ninth to earn his second save of the young season as he didn’t allow a hit and recorded one strikeout.

Jacksonville took a 2-0 lead in the first inning off Eagle starter Matt Crohan. Angelo Amendolare drove home the first Dolphin run with a double down the left field line that scored Cameron Gibson from second. Amendolare scored the second run after he stole third base and came home on a throwing error by Eagle catcher Roger Gonzalez.

Winthrop got a run back in the bottom half in the bottom of the inning on a bases loaded sacrifice fly by Mark Lowrie that scored Tyler Asbill, who drew a leadoff walk.

Winthrop took a 6-2 lead after the 5-run third. Babe Thomas drew a walk, followed by a single by Anthony Paulsen. They were moved up to second and third on a bunt by John Menken. Thomas scored the tying run on an infield hit by Lowrie while Paulsen advanced to third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Gonzalez to give Winthrop the lead. Brad Kaczka reached second on a two-base throwing error by the shortstop. Mitch Spires then walked to load the bases. After a pitching change, Kyle Edwards drew a bases loaded walk to score Lowrie. Winthrop cashed in two more runs as Asbill reached on a throwing error by the second baseman that allowed Kaczka and Edwards to score to make it a 6-2 game.

Jacksonville shortstop got one run back for the Dolphins with a solo home run in the fourth. JU got its fourth run in the eighth inning when Connor Marabell doubled to lead off the frame and later scored on an infield grounder.
