Oconee Releases Tritium Into Keowee River

Greenville, SC  —  The Oconee Nuclear Station routinely discharges contaminated water into the Keowee River.  The water contains radioactive tritium.  Sandra Magee, a Duke Energy spokeswoman, says the releases are safe and well below the Environmental Protection Agency ceiling for drinking water.

Critics say the diluted concentrations can increase the risk of cancer.
