As Independence Day approaches, residents in York and Lancaster counties are urged to celebrate responsibly and familiarize themselves with state and local fireworks laws.

In South Carolina, fireworks are generally prohibited on public property, including parks, schools and government-owned land, unless a permit has been issued. State law also bans the sale or possession of bottle rockets, cherry bombs, M-80s, ground salutes, bulldog salutes and other fireworks containing more than two grains of pyrotechnic composition designed to produce loud sound effects. Fireworks may only be purchased by individuals age 16 and older.

York County also prohibits the discharge of fireworks at all county boat landings, and state law makes it illegal to ignite fireworks within designated Fireworks Prohibited Zones. In the City of York, fireworks may only be discharged on July 4 until 1 a.m. on July 5, unless part of a permitted public display.

Lancaster County follows South Carolina’s fireworks laws, including restrictions on prohibited fireworks, public property and designated prohibited zones. Professional fireworks displays require permits and must comply with state safety regulations.

Residents are encouraged to attend organized fireworks displays when possible and to use consumer fireworks responsibly to help ensure a safe holiday for everyone.
