FORT MILL, S.C. — The Humane Society of York County (HSYC) is putting the spotlight on a few special furry friends this week and sharing an urgent call for help as the shelter continues to face high summer demand.

Cat of the Week: Purrito

Purrito, a two-year-old male cat, is HSYC’s featured feline this week. Surrendered due to a change in his previous family’s circumstances, Purrito is looking for a new forever home. Shelter staff say his name comes from his nonstop purring and affectionate nature.

While he loves people and children, Purrito is best suited for a home without other cats. He is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and ready for adoption. Those interested in meeting Purrito can call the shelter at 803-802-0902 or visit www.humanesocietyofyorkcounty.org to review adoption requirements.

Dog and Family of the Week: Marmalade and Her Puppies

This week’s featured canine is Marmalade, a five-year-old rescue dog pulled from Animal Control with her three puppies—Delphinia, Peonie, and Wisteria. Marmalade is described as a gentle and sweet dog, now thriving in shelter care. She is fully vetted and looking forward to a stable home.

Her puppies, believed to be lab mixes, are just under five months old. All four dogs are crate-trained, with Marmalade also showing confidence on a leash. Each is seeking a home where they can continue to grow and build trust.

The HSYC encourages interested adopters to call the shelter or visit its website for details.

Summer Reminders and Shelter Needs

With rising temperatures, HSYC is reminding the community to be mindful of pets’ safety in the heat. In addition, the shelter is experiencing a surge in kittens and is urgently in need of foster volunteers.

Foster families are critical to saving lives, and both cat and dog fosters are needed. Community members can learn more and sign up at this link.

The shelter also continues to ask for support in the form of financial donations, supply contributions, and spreading the word on social media. High-need items include litter, bleach, laundry detergent, and dog and cat treats.

Additionally, HSYC is seeking land—ideally 5–10 acres—for future expansion. Anyone with land available for sale is encouraged to contact the shelter directly.

So far in 2025, HSYC has successfully placed 98 dogs and 326 cats into permanent homes.
