FORT MILL, S.C. — The Humane Society of York County (HSYC) has spotlighted two special animals in need of loving homes this week: Zara the cat and Spumoni the dog. Both are shining examples of the shelter’s mission to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome animals across York County.

Cat of the Week: Meet Zara

Zara is a 2-year-old diluted calico cat who came to HSYC as an owner surrender — a situation that often places pets at high risk in municipal shelters. Fortunately, Zara found safety and care at HSYC, where she currently resides in the Cat Lounge. Her sociable nature makes her a great companion for other cats, and she enjoys spending her time watching birds from the window.

Zara is spayed, microchipped, vaccinated, and ready for adoption. Her unique personality reflects the classic calico traits — independent, occasionally sassy, and affectionate on her own terms.

Prospective adopters are encouraged to visit the shelter or call 803-802-0902 to learn more. Adoption requirements and the application process are available at humanesocietyofyorkcounty.org.

Dog of the Week: Spumoni’s Story of Resilience

Spumoni, a four-year-old mixed breed dog, has overcome extraordinary odds. Rescued in January after being used as a bait dog, she arrived at HSYC with serious injuries and heartworm disease. Thanks to a dedicated foster family and months of medical care, Spumoni has made a full recovery and is now ready to be adopted.

Despite her past, Spumoni remains affectionate and playful. She enjoys walks, plays well with other dogs, and is house-trained. Her foster describes her as “a gold medalist in snuggling” and says she brings joy to everyone she meets.

To adopt Spumoni or learn more about fostering opportunities, call HSYC at 803-802-0902.

Community Support Needed During Kitten Season

As kitten season ramps up, HSYC is calling for community support through fostering, volunteering, and donations. Supplies such as clay cat litter, baby food (turkey or chicken), bleach, laundry detergent, and dog treats are in high demand. The shelter also welcomes gently used items for its thrift shop, with proceeds going directly to rescue operations.

Shelter Success in 2025

So far in 2025, HSYC has successfully placed 70 dogs and 223 cats into permanent homes. The organization credits community involvement for these milestones and encourages residents to follow their Facebook page (facebook.com/HSYC.animals) for updates, success stories, and adoptable pets.
