Military and Emergency Managers Convene for SC Disaster Preparedness Seminar

Military representatives from across South Carolina met on Thursday with state and county emergency managers for a disaster preparedness seminar. The event, hosted by the South Carolina Emergency Management Division (SCEMD), focused on enhancing readiness and coordination for future emergencies.
Participants engaged in discussions about best practices and shared lessons learned from various exercises and past incidents. These included significant events such as Hurricane Helene and Tropical Storm Debby, among others that have impacted the state.
The seminar featured remarks from key figures in South Carolina’s emergency response landscape. Major General Robin B. Stilwell, the Adjutant General for South Carolina, addressed the attendees. Kim Stenson, director of the SCEMD, also provided insights on preparedness efforts.
Major General Stilwell emphasized the South Carolina National Guard’s training and readiness to support state and local communities during emergencies, noting the seminar’s value in ongoing readiness efforts. Stenson underscored the critical importance of having trained personnel prepared for swift response when emergencies affect South Carolina.
Representatives from a wide array of military branches were in attendance, highlighting the broad collaboration in disaster preparedness. These included personnel from the State Guard, S.C. National Guard, U.S. Army, U.S. Army Reserve, U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, U.S. Coast Guard, and the Air Force. The collaborative seminar aimed to strengthen inter-agency cooperation and ensure a unified response to future disasters.
