The Humane Society of York County (HSYC) is kicking off the week with two incredible pets in the spotlight and a call to the community for compassion, support, and involvement.

? Cat of the Week: Zessin

Meet Zessin, a resilient and incredibly affectionate two-year-old tabby who has quickly become a staff favorite at HSYC. Found as a stray by a police officer, Zessin came to the rescue with a painful chemical burn down his back. Though his physical wounds have healed, the love he now offers seems to come from a much deeper place.

“He’s an old soul,” said a volunteer. “You feel like he knows you and understands.”

Zessin is fully vetted — neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and tested — and he’s ready to find a forever home. Visitors are encouraged to spend time with him in the Cat Lounge, where Zessin’s calm and loving demeanor shines brightest. To meet this special boy, call 803-802-0902 or visit humanesocietyofyorkcounty.org for adoption information.

? Dog of the Week: Arbys

Say hello to Arbys, a lovable nine-month-old large breed pup with a big heart and even bigger paws. Arbys was found as a stray and has spent eight long weeks at the rescue, waiting for the perfect family to come along.

Playful, smart, and affectionate, Arbys thrives on interaction and is great with other dogs. He’s neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and eager to learn and grow with a forever family. Staff say he’s a “big boy with a baby’s heart,” and hope his time at the shelter ends soon with a loving home. Call 803-802-0902 to schedule a meet and greet.

? How You Can Help: Support HSYC’s Life-Saving Mission

Spring has brought much-needed rain — and some muddy messes to the rescue. HSYC is calling on the community to help in creative and meaningful ways:

  • Dry laundry: Pick up a basket or two of freshly washed linens, dry and fold them at home, and bring them back.

  • Volunteer: Join the HSYC family — at the shelter, thrift shop, off-site events, or as a foster. Kitten season is in full swing and foster families are urgently needed. Sign up here.

  • Donate: Become a recurring donor or drop off supplies like clay cat litter, bleach, laundry detergent, and dog treats. You can also contribute gently used items to the HSYC Thrift Shop, where proceeds directly support rescue efforts.

  • Promote: Use your social media voice to showcase adoptable pets and share HSYC’s mission. Success stories start with awareness!

? Success by the Numbers

As of May 2025, HSYC has already placed 54 dogs and 183 cats into loving homes this year — and they’re just getting started.
