LANCASTER, S.C. — A 12-year-old boy has pleaded guilty to second-degree arson after setting a fire inside the Walmart on the Highway 9 Bypass in Lancaster on Sunday, May 4.

The fire began around 4:30 p.m. in the store’s crafts and sewing section, prompting an immediate evacuation. Firefighters arrived within minutes and quickly extinguished the flames. No injuries were reported.

Lancaster Police identified and detained the boy later that evening. He appeared in family court on Monday, May 5, where he entered a guilty plea. The court has ordered a mental health evaluation to be completed within 45 days before sentencing.

Fire Chief Justin McLellan credited the swift response of firefighters and Walmart staff for minimizing damage and ensuring customer safety. The store remains closed pending further assessment.

This incident follows a previous event at the same Walmart on April 1, when a shooting occurred, injuring two individuals.
