YORK COUNTY, S.C. (Nov. 14, 2024) – The United Way of York County received a $5,000 grant from the Sisters of Charity
Foundation of South Carolina. The foundation awards grants to nonprofits that strive to reduce poverty throughout the state
of South Carolina and beyond. United Way of York County was part of the Immediate Needs category.
These Immediate Needs grants support organizations that meet the fundamental needs of people experiencing poverty in
South Carolina. The Sisters of Charity Foundation donated $453,000 across 88 different organizations in this category.
The United Way of YC works towards financial stability for low-income York County families. The grant from the Sisters of
Charity Foundation of South Carolina will fund part of our Financial Stability Network. “We are grateful for the support once
again from the Sisters of Charity Foundation. The foundation’s generosity enables the United Way to extend assistance to
more people. Particularly, a significant portion of the families benefiting from this support are single mothers facing financial
challenges. Statistics show that 68% of single mothers encounter difficulties. Our team actively engages with these women,
providing one-on-one financial coaching. Through education and assistance, we have helped these moms increase credit
scores, decrease debt and establish emergency savings. Thanks to the aid of the Sisters of Charity Foundation, we can further
assist more families in overcoming obstacles,” said Rebecca Melton, President, of United Way of YC.
In this cycle of funding, the Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina awarded 120 grants totaling $1,148,000 to
nonprofit organizations across the state. 21 of the 120 organizations to receive a grant are located in the Midlands, a $155,000
commitment to the region.
“We’re thrilled to announce our Cycle 2 Grantees and admire each of these incredible organizations for their dedication to
building a better South Carolina,” said Donna Waites, President of Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina. “It’s a
privilege to work alongside these organizations and the Foundation looks forward to helping make our state a brighter place
for all.”
Macon Lovelace, the Chairman of the Board of Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina, added, “By dedicating ourselves
to the common good and embracing creative ideas, South Carolina can become a place where everyone has what they need to
succeed. Our mission to reduce poverty across the state becomes a reality when we collaborate with these empowered
organizations.”
