Rock Hill Man Who Stopped Convenience Store Robbery Dies in Car Crash
ROCK HILL, S.C. — Dalton Wheeler, a 24-year-old Rock Hill man who gained local recognition last year for his bravery during a convenience store robbery, tragically died in a car crash on Sunday, according to the York County Coroner’s Office.
Wheeler became a local hero in July 2023 when he intervened in an armed robbery at a Circle K on Cherry Road. Police reported that Wheeler walked into the store and tackled a suspected robber. During the struggle, the suspect pulled a gun and shot Wheeler twice. Despite his injuries, Wheeler’s actions helped police apprehend the suspect, who was arrested near the store.
On Sunday afternoon, Wheeler was involved in a fatal car crash near the intersection of Old York Road and S. Shiloh Road. Authorities said his vehicle flipped over, and Wheeler was ejected from the car. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
