Report reveals detail to crack in Fury 325 at Carowinds last summer

On Friday, details have emerged as to what maybe led to the break in the support beam of Carowinds’ largest roller coaster. Of course this took place last summer….the problem forced the closure of Fury 325 for over a month until it was fixed and inspected. The Department of Labor released a report after an investigation since the crack. They say the crack was caused by “undirectional bending fatigue”. It adds that the fracture started at the toe or edge and because of where it formed, engineers called the crack a “stress raiser” and it accelerated from there. The column was put in place in 2015 and via the report, should have a life expectancy of more than 50 years.
The Department of Labor confirmed a previous report by our news partners at Channel 9 that six more cracks were found later in the Summer. Records show they were indeed fixed, and re-welded. Carowinds released a statement saying that the the ride was inspected and approved for operation February 29th prior to the opening for the spring season. They also said the ride is inspected daily by staff.
