Winthrop to offer free saliva testing for campus community
No more nose swabs for local students. Winthrop University has announced a partnership with the USC College of Pharmacy that will provide free, saliva based COVID-19 testing to the campus community through 2021.
University officials have been seeking a testing option for students since they returned to campus at the beginning of the. Officials hope to better monitor asymptomatic spread, which is a key factor in campus outbreaks around the country.
The test is free, noninvasive and results can typically be shared in 24 to 48 hours. The PCR saliva based test shows 97.5 percent accuracy in the early stage of infection
