Rock Hill, SC —  Winthrop softball put up nine runs on 14 hits in a 9-2 win over Furman, Sunday afternoon on the final day of the Winthrop Kickoff Tournament.

WHAT HAPPENED
vs Furman

  • Watson got the Eagles off to a good start with a quick 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts
  • In the bottom of the first, Madyson Watson drew a walk with two outs and Ansley Gilreath singled to left center moving Watson to third, but Watson was stranded
  • Furman took the first lead in the top of the third with a two-run homerun to right center off the bat of Claire Ginder
  • Eagles respond quickly as Bailey Warren led off with a single to left center followed by a bunt single from Macy McCall
  • Lauren King stood in and delivered a single to right center to plate Warren
  • The Eagles added another four runs to take the lead after back-to-back homeruns from Madyson Watson and Ansley Gilreath
  • Watson’s homer was a three-run shot
  • In the top of the fifth Macy McCall tracked down a deep fly ball at the wall making a phenomenal catch to rob Mariah Bohl of a leadoff hit
  • Watson ignited the offense in the bottom of the fifth with a double to right center, her second hit of the day
  • Two batters later, Taylor Charlton drove in Watson across with a single for a 6-2 lead
  • Kaitlyn Tucker followed with a single up the middle to score Charlton and then Ashley Westbrooks doubles to right center to put runners at second and third
  • Bailey Warren doubled to right field to score Tucker and Westbrooks but was out at third trying to stretch it to a triple
  • Outside of the homerun in the second, Watson continued to hold Furman’s bats in check with no hits or runs after the second inning recorded eight strikeouts through the six innings
  • Watson tossed a complete game allowing two runs with three walks and nine strikeouts

EXTRA BASES

  • Gilreath hit her fifth homerun of the season (9 games) and now has 25 in her career, which ties her for 3rd all-time with Tessa Thomas
  • Gilreath also moved into 33rd on the all-time hit list while Westbrooks moved within five hits of 13th all-time
  • Watson’s nine strikeouts gives her 300 in her career and has 32 career wins which is one away from Winthrop’s all-time Top 10
  • Watson also connected on her third homerun of the season, which ties her single-season best a she reaches 10 in her career
  • Eagles have scored 19 runs in the last two games after scoring 18 runs total in the first seven games
  • Gilreath extended her hitting streak to nine straight games and now has at least one hit in 22 of her last 24 games
  • McCall extended her streak of reaching base to nine straight and Charlton has reached in eight straight

Winthrop is back in action on Terry Field next week Friday afternoon as they will take on Syracuse at 1:30 p.m. and Saint Francis at 4:00 p.m. as part of the Winthrop Garnet-Gold Classic.
