York County has received confirmation from the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control of a case of Zika Virus in a person who traveled outside of the country.

York County began mosquito control efforts in the Hickory Grove area Tuesday evening.  The 165 yard area was sprayed with Maverick Perimeter, a CDC approved chemical.

The job was done by two individuals wearing backpacks.  Channell says that the backpacks will allow the chemical to be more concentrated and the spray will dissolve after an hour.

Back in July a Tega Cay resident contracted the Zika Virus.  That area was treated as well but, the chemical used in this case is not the same as the one used in Tega Cay.

The chemical spray is not harmful to humans or pets and the area will continue to be monitored in the coming months.

Channel has no reason to believe local mosquitoes are carrying the virus.
