A Rock Hill man who pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the shooting death of a friend he said was like a brother was sentenced to up to five years in prison as a youthful offender Monday.

20-year-old Robreece Pickett admitted it was his fault, and apologized to the family of 17-year-old Jaterreon Thorne in the April killing.

Witnesses say Pickett was outside Thorne’s Horseman Drive home when he began playing with a 22-calilber pistol he had brought.

While Pickett was playing with the weapon, it went off and hit Thorne once in the chest.

Thorne was sitting down at the time, and collapsed when he tried to get up and run.

Tamika Douglas Thorne, the victim’s mother, says Pickett got nothing more than a slap on the wrist.
