With students heading off — or back — to college in the next few weeks, the new president at Winthrop University says a student’s declared major in college might not be as important as others may believe.

Dan Mahony, who took over as Winthrop’s eleventh president’s in July, explains on WRHI’s “Straight Talk” that anecdotal evidence suggests  that more than anything else, employers are looking for well-rounded students.

“A lot of [employers] will tell you they don’t care what the student’s major is,” Mahony said. “Critical thinking, problem solving, communications skills, teamwork. If you have students who are well-prepared in those areas, they don’t care.”

Here more from Mahony, including his plans for increasing Winthrop’s enrollment, in the “Straight Talk” podcast.
