Former S.C. Representative John Spratt was honored Tuesday night by the Palmetto Council of the Boy Scouts of America during its Golden Eagle Dinner at Winthrop University.

Spratt represented South Carolina’s Fifth Congressional District for nearly three decades and downplayed the extra attention.

Local attorney Ben Johnson served as the chair of the Boy Scouts’ York District for four years and recalled a trip through the fifth district where he said Spratt displayed his genuine satisfaction with helping people.

Red Ferguson served as 16th Circuit Solicitor for 19 years and said he grew up with Spratt who turned 70 in November.

Tuesday’s dinner raised $175,000 for the Palmetto Council of the Boy Scouts of America.
