SC Educators unveil plan to replace NCLB in SC

Monday night, educators and the general public had their first chance to see South Carolina’s proposed waiver to the federal No Child Left Behind Act.

The fifth of 21 public hearings was held at Northwestern High School led by members of the state education department.

Legislative and Public Affairs Director Jay Ragley tells WRHI the draft currently under review will allow schools to be rated and evaluated on standards that schools can actually meet.

As it stands now, schools are evaluated on a set of 17 areas, including standards that are out of educators’ control — like student attendance.

The proposal that’s now under review moves to change those benchmarks to more realistic standards. Rock Hill Schools Superintendent Lynn Moody she’s more than open to a new way of evaluating her schools.
