A Texas man was escorted off the premises of the York County Library on Black Street Thursday after he was unlawfully soliciting signatures for a petition.

The 53-year-old man, whose name was redacted from the report, told police he was trying to get signatures on a petition for an election issue. The responding officers told the man he needed a permit to solicit within city limits, but the man told officers he was exercising his first amendment rights.

After the man was informed of the charges that could be brought against him should he choose not to leave the man said he would go to city hall and obtain a permit. The report was made for documentation purposes only.
