Charleston events recall Civil War’s beginnings

Hundreds of reenactors are in South Carolina this week for the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. Starting this past weekend, Charleston is remembering the Civil War with nine days of activities open to the public. Today, reenactors are at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant to camp out, and to participate in events like artillery, cavalry, infantry, medicine and home life demonstrations.

Also today at the Fort Sumter National Monument and Fort Moultrie, reenactors will present programs including musket firing and artillery drills. Tomorrow there will be a commemoration ceremony of the firing of the first cannon shots of the Civil War at Fort Sumter. The U.S. Civil War began with those shots 150 years ago.
