Southwest Airlines made a major announcement for South Carolina today.

We’re just so fortunate and happy to be able to provide low fares and big jets to the locals of Charleston. We are really looking forward to it in March of next year and we can’t wait. Southwest Airlines provides low-fares, we also provide bags fly free, your first two check bags including golf bags.

Southwest Airlines spokesperson Leslie Brewer says the discount carrier will begin services at the Charleston and Greenville international airports.

Southwest will begin service to multiple destinations starting March 13 of 2011. The non-stops include Baltimore, Washington, Chicago Midway, Nashville, and Houston.

Southwest will serve as South Carolina’s low-cost air carrier, similar to what AirTran did before it left the state. Brewer says they are in the process of buying AirTran.

At this time we have submitted paperwork to acquire AirTran. At this time it is with the Department of Transportation, and we will see what happens, but we look forward to getting some good news.

House Speaker Bobby Harrell played a key role in getting Southwest to fly into South Carolina. He says he expects the new carrier to attract new investments and high-quality jobs to the state.
