SPA terminal plan cruisin’ through

A new terminal plan at the Port of Charleston is cruisin’ right through. Charleston City Council approved a controversial plan to replace the cruise terminal at the Port of Charleston with one that would serve two cruise ships a week. The plan, that would replace the current terminal is part of a larger $25 million plan by the State Ports Authority to redevelop the southern end of the port and shift some cargo traffic to the northern end.

The Post and Courier reports the city council meeting was more of a three-hour debate between those who were opposed and those who were in favor. However, not a single council member voted “nay.” Some opponents, including some environmental and preservation groups, say the added cruise ships are too large to bring in to the port, and two a week is just too much.
