Ex-Columbia Councilman Cromartie to be sentenced in October
U.S. Attorney Bill Nettles says former Columbia City Councilman Ernest William (E.W.) Cromartie will be sentenced October 15 on tax evasion charges.
Cromartie pleaded guilty in the spring to two counts of aggravated structuring and also income tax evasion for failing to pay more than $25,000 in federal income taxes. He admitted he made hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash deposits, while keeping the amount just under the level that would have required him to report the transactions.
Judge David Norton will preside in the case. But the punishment that lies ahead for Cromartie is no secret. He has already agreed with prosecutors on a sentence of one year and a day. Cromartie served on council for more than 25 years, making him the longest serving member to date.
