You’re not going to be able to smell or see anything different between an egg that has salmonella and one that doesn’t. So, really the most important thing is that it is cooked thoroughly.
Health officials say they have seen nearly 300 cases of illness spread throughout the U.S. so far from this outbreak. This specific outbreak has not hit South Carolina, but Pranger says salmonella is not uncommon in the state.
Usually we see about 20 cases a month, now we are seeing about 30 cases a month. And, the most important thing for people to do is make sure you actually cook your eggs thoroughly so they were hard boiled. Which, if there is any bacteria in it, will kill it. So, people need to not eat raw or undercooked eggs.
The recall involves about nearly a half a billion eggs from the farm. Health officials are looking into links between the people infected by the salmonella poisoning.
Although South Carolina has not seen any cases of salmonella from this specific outbreak, Pranger says it’s only serious within a certain demographic.
For infants and very young children, and for elderly, or frail people, they need to go to the doctor. For anybody else, four to seven days and it’s going to resolve itself.
The eggs recalled were sold under 13 different brand names: Lucerne, Albertson, Mountain Dairy, Ralph’s, Boomsma’s, Sunshine, Hillandale, Trafficanda, Farm Fresh, Shoreland, Lund, Dutch Farms and Kemp.
