Divers have found and recovered the body of a 30-year-old man who disappeared after witnesses saw him go over the side of a boat Wednesday afternoon on Lake Wylie.

The man was identified as Conroy Oliver of Charlotte.

Charlotte Fire Department Capt. Dennis Gist said the search and rescue for the man had become a recovery effort and that crews found Oliver using sonar.

A York County dive team was called to the lake and York, Steele Creek and Charlotte agencies responded around 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Charlotte Fire officials say family and friends were on the boat Wednesday with Oliver when it happened.

Officials searched the area until it became dark Wednesday night and wrapped up around 9:30 p.m.

Authorities could not say what, if anything, caused him to go overboard.

The effort was a joint operation because they were not sure where the person fell out of the boat.

Boats were visible on a wide swath of the lake until sundown Wednesday evening.

Charlotte Fire crews used sonar but did not deploy divers.

“At this point we want to be able to say, ‘Hey there is an object.’ It’s worth putting the divers in to go to confirm if there is possibly a body or not,” said Gist.

Crews resumed their search around 8 a.m. Thursday.

The man’s family was assisting with the recovery efforts.
