SLED investigating after suspect stunned by police dies
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating after a suspect, who police say was intoxicated, died at a hospital after being stunned by officers during his arrest. Deputy Coroner Don McCown told media that 26-year-old Benston Calvin Clinkscales died Sunday at AnMed Health after being arrested. Lt. David Creamer with the Anderson City Police Department says officers responded to a domestic disturbance Saturday evening at a northeast Anderson house. When officers arrived, Clinkscales had fallen through a glass window and was bleeding from several cuts to his arm. McCown says Clinkscales was “extremely intoxicated,” belligerent and scuffled with officers before they used a stun gun on him. Clinkscales went into cardiac arrest at 12:20 a.m. and died about 30 minutes later.
McCown says SLED is investigating because officers were involved in the incident.
