ROCK HILL, SC- After a tough battle for 110 minutes, the Winthrop women’s soccer team tied with Coastal Carolina 1-1 on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles are now 5-6-1 on the year while the Chants move to 7-5-2.

Despite most of the possession taking place the Winthrop side of the field in the first half, the Lady Eagles had the first dangerous opportunity as Krystyna Freda got a clean shot off from 18 yards out but goalkeeper Becca Austin managed to hang on to the ball. Freshmen Courtney McLeod also had a chance to take the lead but her shot from 20 yards out went just over the crossbar.

Coastal Carolina finally broke through in the 15th minute as senior Kacey Kelley crossed the ball from the left side of the 18 yard box and the ball found its way over the head of Amelia Henderson. Coastal almost doubled the lead in the 30th minute but Sam Patterson’s shot went just outside the left goal post.

The possession in the second half was split evenly but Freda stepped up and scored her 13th goal of the year to tie it up in the 70th minute. Freshman Zoe Conover dribbled through the middle of the field and passed it out wide to Samantha Prytulak who crossed the ball into the 18 yard box where Freda hit a one touch finish to make it 1-1.

Winthrop almost took the lead five minutes later when Freda took a shot from 20 yards out but goalkeeper Faith Farley, who came in net for the Chants at halftime, got her fingertips on it and hit it over the crossbar.

Both teams battled throughout over time, with each team having opportunities to walk away with the win. Winthrop’s best chance came with two minutes left in the second overtime period as Freda dribbled down the field on a counter attack but the Chants defense managed to break up the play despite being down players.

The Eagles will host Charleston Southern this Wednesday night at 6:00 p.m.
