Asheville, NC – The Winthrop women’s tennis team routed UNC-Asheville, 6-1, on Wednesday afternoon, earning their fifth conference victory of the season.

The Eagles jumped out to an early lead by capturing the doubles point. In the No. 1 doubles position, Winthrop’s Andressa and Alice Garcia bested UNC-Asheville’s Zoe Hamel and Ericka Rivero, 8-5, however the Bulldogs were victorious in the No. 2 doubles position, as Amryn Soldier and Christine Boissevain defeated Caitlin Cridland and Ekin Gunaysu, 8-6. The Eagle’s Tijana Uzelac and Beth Williamson prevailed, 8-4, over Emily McNall and Gillian Lewis in the No. 3 doubles position.

Winthrop bounced back from a poor singles competition performance against Charleston Southern on Monday, with superb singles play against UNC-Asheville. In the No. 1 singles position, Andressa Garcia overpowered Hamel in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, while Cridland triumphed over Rivers, 7-6, 6-1, in the No. 2 singles position. Alice Garcia was victorious against Soldier, 6-2, 6-2, in the No. 3 singles position, and Gunaysu won in three sets against Boissevain, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0, in the No. 4 singles position. UNC-Asheville earned their only point of the day in the No. 5 singles position, as McNall defeated Uzelac, 7-6, 6-2, and Monica Aguado routed Lewis, 6-2, 6-1, in the No. 6 singles position.

The Eagles overall record now stands at 11-4, and 5-1 in conference. Winthrop will host Marshall on Friday, April 4th, at 11 a.m.
