ROCK HILL, SC—Winthrop head men’s soccer coach Rich Posipanko has announced the signing of Charles Coulson to a national letter of intent to play for the Eagles next season, Wednesday afternoon.
Coulson is a local standout that attended Rock Hill High School and played for the South Carolina United Battery Academy. At 6-3, 200lbs he gives the Eagles good size at the striker position. He will join the Eagles in January 2014 as he took some time off after graduating this past spring.
“Charles did a smart thing and took a year off after graduating high school and was able to continue playing for SC United Battery Academy because of his age,” said Posipanko. “He is a hard worker with a very good work ethic. He is very intelligent and also has good leadership qualities.”
Coulson captained the 2013 Rock Hill High School varsity team where he tallied 25 goals and seven assists on the season. He was a first team all-area and all-region selection as well as being selected to represent South Carolina at the Clash of the Carolinas. He’s also played for the South Carolina ODP team, Discoveries Soccer Club and Charlotte Soccer Academy.
“We are pleased to have Charles join the program in the spring. He will be a target forward, similar to Achille Obougou. We feel he has the potential to be very productive over his career here. By entering Winthrop in the spring, he will have an entire semester to adapt to the college game. We hope this pays dividends both for him and the team next season. Since all four seniors we lose are attacking players, we hope Charles will be able to help fill those holes.”
Coulson is the first signee for the 2014 season as the Eagles do have four seniors that are in their final year of eligibility.
