With just a few weeks to go before York County kids go back to school, South Carolina’s tax-free weekend is underway through Sunday night.

Thousands of items deemed necessary for back to school shopping are tax-free, as decided by the S.C. Department of Revenue.

North Carolina has a similar tax-free program but as Alicia Rosenthal of the York County Regional Chamber explains, this year is the last of the Tarheel State’s tax-free weekends.

Over the weekend, the chamber estimates York County taxpayers will save $108,000 with the sales tax exemption, which will be the third larges of the year.

And when you do make that trip for back-to-school shopping, Rosenthal hopes you’ll stay right here in York County.

The back-to-school tax-free weekend is the third largest retail sales weekend in South Carolina, behind the weekend after Thanksgiving and the weeks leading up to Christmas.
