Lancaster mother abandons baby in attempt to flee arrest for stealing laptops
A Lancaster woman remains in jail on $15,000 dollars bond after police say she left her one-year-old daughter with a woman she briefly met.
Warrants show 23-year-old Melissa Meyer and her boyfriend stole 11 laptops from the Lancaster Walmart and this weekend.
Authorities say Meyer called police and left a message saying she would turn herself in when she had the money to bail herself out of jail.
Meyer was spotted by police walking her daughter in stroller Tuesday near the corner of 15th and Elm Streets. That’s when she left the child, stroller in tow, with a women she said was her cousin.
Meyer later admitted that she had just met the woman a few days before her arrest.
She now faces one count of Unlawful Conduct Towards a Child. State Department of Social Services was notified of the incident.
