CHARLOTTE, NC– Winthrop’s Alice Garcia (Brasilia, Brazil) was named the Big South’s freshman of the week. The league office announced the weekly honors earlier today and Garcia was named freshman of the week and Yvonne Hubler of Charleston Southern won the player of the week. This is the fourth time this season that Alice Garcia was named freshman of the week.

Alice Garcia defeated Cameron Richard of Liberty 6-1, 6-7, 6-2 this past Friday at Winthrop Memorial Tennis Courts. Garcia played the singles match at No. 2 due to the injury of Lady Eagles top player Yasmine Alkema (Algiers, Algeria). Alice Garcia teamed up with Giovanna Portioli (Curitiba, Brazil) to defeat Liberty’s Rebekah Jenkins and Nicola Wellman 8-2 at No. 1 doubles.

On the season, Garcia is 10-6 in singles matches and 4-1 when playing at the No. 2 position. In doubles, Garcia is 9-7 and 2-1 when playing doubles at the No. 1 position. Alice Garcia is making her case for freshman of the year in the Big South with her continued improvement throughout the season.
