S.C. Tax Relief Law to Protect Heirs’ Property Owners From Sudden Rate Spikes

The Heirs’ Property Tax Relief Act, passed this spring, is designed to protect families from unexpected tax increases tied to property reassessments. Heirs’ property typically arises when land is inherited by multiple family members over time without formal estate planning. This lack of clarity often leaves families unaware of their exact legal ownership until a crisis hits, such as a relative’s death, storm damage, or the sudden need to repair or sell the home. Resolving these issues frequently involves costly court appearances and family disputes.
While families will still pay standard property tax percentages under the new law, the legislation prevents the dramatic reassessment jumps that often occur during ownership restructuring.
