A motorcyclist has died following a crash in York County on Sunday afternoon after attempting to avoid an oncoming SUV, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol and as reported by WBTV.

The fatal incident occurred at approximately 5:00 p.m. on June 21 at the intersection of Garvin Road and Ashe Road.

According to state troopers, the motorcyclist was traveling southbound on Garvin Road when a Ford Expedition turned off Ashe Road and pulled directly “in the path of” the oncoming motorcycle.

Investigators stated that when the SUV turned, the motorcyclist lost control of the bike and crashed while taking evasive action to avoid a collision. Reportedly, the two vehicles never made physical contact.

The motorcyclist was rushed to a local hospital but later succumbed to their injuries, Highway Patrol confirmed.

Officials have not yet publicly released the identity of the motorcyclist pending notification of next of kin.

In an initial news release issued Sunday night, troopers did not indicate whether the driver of the Ford Expedition would face charges. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the details surrounding the crash.
