York County announced today it will hold a series of public meetings for Pennies for Progress to get input of citizens. Here is the full release.

We want to hear your voice.   Beginning in 1997, and three times since, York County voters have approved a one-cent sales tax known as Pennies For Progress.  This program was the first of its kind in South Carolina. Since 1997, more than one billion dollars has gone into improving roads and intersections across York County.

Citizens ultimately choose the roads that will be widened, paved or improved.  York County Council does not choose the projects, but appoints a commission of citizens who pour over all the requests from the public, and create a project priority list based on that input.

State law requires that all funds raised through the sales tax must go into road projects listed by priority.    It’s critical that we hear from the public about which roads need attention.  Once the final project list for Pennies Five is approved, citizens will vote on it during the general election in November of 2024.

The first of more than a half dozen public meetings is next week in Tega Cay.  Here’s the list of meetings through this fall.
