Eagles Fall To Gamecocks Tuesday Night, 12-4
COLUMBIA, SC – Winthrop’s pitching staff struggled, giving up seven solo home runs in its 12-4 loss to South Carolina Wednesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- South Carolina scored first in the bottom of the second inning, taking a 1-0 lead off a double off the bat of Jeff Heinrich that scored Josiah Sightler who reached on an error earlier in the inning.
- Eagles left Tyler Baker stranded in the top of the third.
- Wes Clarke and Joshiah Sightler both went yard off Macklin Ohs with solo shots in the bottom of the third, taking a 3-0 lead.
- Pitcher Magdiel Cotto, who came in in relief for Will Sanders, walked Scout McFalls and Spencer Yankle in back-to-back at-bats giving Winthrop two early baserunners.
- Dillon Morton singled to left, scoring McFalls, getting the Eagles on the board, 3-1 in the fourth.
- Morton would advance on a passed ball that scored Yankle to bring Winthrop within one, 3-2.
- Pitcher Jack Mahoney would sit Jonathan Strauss, Hunter Christopher and Joey Tepper down to end the fourth inning.
- Garrett Gainey comes in in relief for the bottom of the fourth and sits the Gamecocks down 1, 2, 3.
- Tyler Baker and Joe McNamara went down in order, before Andrew Jenner singled to get on base.
- Yankle would reach first on a fielder’s choice and advance to second on an error, Jenner scores to tie the game at three apiece.
- In the Gamecocks half of the fifth, they put up three runs. Braylen Wimmer led off with a double to right field, Wes Clarke walked before David Mendham reached on a fielder’s choice and Wimmer scored on the error.
- Josiah Sightler singled, scoring Clarke, before Jeff Heinrich singled to left, scoring Mendham.
- The seventh inning looked promising for the Eagles who had bases loaded with one out.
- Dillon Morton grounded out, scoring Joe McNamara to make it a 8-4 game in favor of the Gamecocks.
- Colten Rendon came in to pitch the eighth and gave up back-to-back-to-back solo home runs to Braylen Wimmer, Wes Clarke and David Mendham to take a 12-4 lead over the Eagles.
- Jason Crumley came in in relief and gave up a solo of his own before striking out Jalen Vasquez and getting Michael Robinson to ground out.
- Winthrop went down in order to end the game.
