Winthrop’s Dacus library to undergo nearly $1M renovations

Starting Tuesday, Winthrop’s Dacus Library is set to undergo nearly 1-million dollars in renovation.

Library services Dean Mark Herring tells WRHI the upgrades are designed to adapt the 40-year-old structure on Oakland Avenue to better suit the current needs of students

Herring says that despite public perception that libraries have outlived their usefulness, patron traffic at the Dacus library is now at an all-time high.

Herring says the main floor’s reference desk, a separate circulation desk and two-thirds of the library’s shelving will disappear, making room for additional group study rooms, tech booth and a new combined reference and circulation desk.

Herring says despite future plans for a new library in the center of the school’s campus, the upgrade was badly needed.

Herring says this summer’s work will allow the library to transition from a full print environment to a full electronic operation he says there’s “no doubt” that this is the direction academic libraries are headed.
