Layoffs slated for SRS
The company that manages the 310 square mile Savannah River Site announced Wednesday that it plans to lay off 1,400 contractors in 2011. 800 of those contractors’ jobs were funded with federal stimulus dollars. The total anticipated layoffs represent more than a fifth of the workforce employed by Savannah River Nuclear Solutions. The 800 positions also represent over 25 percent of the 3,100 jobs at SRS that were either saved or created by federal stimulus money. Officials at Savannah River Nuclear Solutions say starting next week the company will begin offering severance packages to employees who volunteer to leave or retire.
