The first phase of GiTi Tire’s plan to spend $568 million and hire 1700 people at a manufacturing facility in Chester County is virtually complete.

Chester County economic development director Karlissa Parker says 350 potential engineers have already been interviewed.

“60% of those 350 were from Chester County.  And they were blown away by the quality of the candidates.  A lot of them were commuting out for jobs, and looked at this as an opportunity to turn around.  That’s kind of been our plan.  We currently have 14,000 people in the workforce, and 9,475 leave every day.”

Parker says GiTi Tire has targeted production to begin in May 2017.

“They will actually be producing product then.  As I understand their schedule they’ll be doing some hiring four years in.  They’ll look at hiring again in the first quarter and be fully staffed in May 2017.  That’s the first phase.  The second phase should start shortly thereafter.”

Parker says the second phase will be a replica of the first phase.

She says as it stands now the facility near Highway 9 is about a mile-and-a-half long.
