Dozens of Winthrop University students gathered in front of Byrnes Auditorium Tuesday night to light candles on behalf of those lost in Friday’s terrorist attacks in Paris.

Scott Shinabargar, an associate professor of French and head of the Department of World Languages and Cultures at Winthrop, told the crowd he really didn’t have a lot to say about the tragedies.

“An event that is this horrific and this senseless,” Shinabargar said, “it’s hard to put into words how we feel and how we process that.”

“But that’s going to be something we have to deal with,” he added.

Winthrop’s French students also participated in the vigil.

“All the support everybody has shown during the last days after the events really means a lot to us,” Thibaut Taquet said.

During the vigil, candles were arranged to display a sketch of the Eiffel Tower.

The event took place in front of Byrnes Auditorium.
