Melinda Lewis is the Associate Professor of Practice in the School of Social Welfare at the University of Kansas, and her new book, THE REAL COLLEGE DEBT CRISIS (Praeger, July 2015) outlines why the student loan system is failing, and what we can do about it.  Evidence shows that the most important factor in a student’s success is not their degree or where they went to college – instead, it is their financial status, or even more importantly their perceived financial status.  The bottom line is that having a child KNOW they are financially prepared for college allows them to believe that upward economic mobility is both possible and achievable.
