DOE hearings held on SRS’s stake in US nuclear future (VIDEO)

South Carolinians are having their say with the federal government about what should happen to nuclear waste and the future of nuclear technologies

The Blue Ribbon Commission on America’s Nuclear Future is hearing from stakeholders affected by activities at the Savannah River Site. The panel was appointed by the president to hear from the public and make recommendations.  The hearings are chaired by Brent Scowcroft, who served as the National Security Advisor to both Presidents Gerald Ford and George H.W. Bush. Their questions today include:

1) What role should communities and governments play, if any, in the development and demonstration of new nuclear technologies?
2) With respect to nuclear reactors and fuel cycle facilities, what are the key safety, environmental and security concerns for local communities, and how should these be addressed.

The hearing  is taking place now in downtown Augusta, GA, and is open to the public.  WATCH LIVE. 

The agenda includes comments from congressmen and U.S. Senators who represent areas affected by SRS. The high-profile panel is also hearing from a panel of activists, scientists and local interests.
