Political Science students get their first ‘taste’ of political conventions

[media-credit id=18 align=”alignright” width=”300″][/media-credit]While the nominees for this year’s presidential elections have been set now for some time, Winthrop students enrolled in a special class dedicated to this year’s political conventions still say there is some rhyme and reason to the expense, security and pomp and circumstance surrounding the Republican and Democratic National Conventions.

Junior Sean McCawley is one of a number of Political Science students enrolled in the month-long class, and says that candidates see a spike in popularity immediately following their respective party’s conventions.

Junior Eric Bostic and McCawley were a number of students who showed up to watch a live feed of the RNC speeches in Tampa Thursday. Bostic says the conventions help unify the political parties.

Bostic is one of some 30-plus students enrolled in a class this month on the political conventions, and will spend several days in Charlotte next week at the Democratic National Convention.

Political Science professor Katarina Moyon says the conventions also serve as a final hurrah for the parties’ nominee.

Junior Shaneequa Evans says while she’s not majoring in political science, she sees the conventions as an opportunity to peel back the layers behind the candidates.

Political Science professor Katarina Moyon and department chair Karen Kedrowski are taking a number of students to Charlotte this weekend to take part in the DNC festivities.

Moyon hopes her students — like McCawley, Bostic and Evans — get to see an up close how the process actually works.

At Wednesday’s RNC “Watch” party, students took part in group discussions and were treated to dishes featuring the candidates’ favorite culinary treats.

Winthrop’s contingent to the DNC heads to the Queen City starting Saturday morning. They will also be on hand at Bank of America Stadium September 6 as President Obama accepts his party’s re-nomination for President.
